NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Paul Solarz is a real life Smokey the Bear who knows how to prevent and manage forest fires. And his company, PatRick Environmental, recently landed a contract, backed by stimulus money from the Recovery Act, to do just that.
PatRick won a bid to trim areas of Oregon’s Deschutes & Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland. This controlled thinning will promote new growth and cut some trees so that natural wildfires don’t become unmanageable.
The project is just one of thousands being carried out across the U.S., in which stimulus money is being used to shore up the country’s infrastructure and generate much-needed business for local companies.

ABC News Teams Up With Obama White House to Present President’s Health Care Plan
June, 22, 2009Comment ABC News will host an hour-long special on health care reform in the U.S. next Wednesday from the White House East Room — a move that ABC is defending but critics are calling a surrender to the Obama administration’s effort to control the debate.
 Police found Timothy Murray at about 1 a.m. Sunday in a wooded stretch in the Folsom area of St. Tammany Parish, the release said.
Police returned Murray to the St. Tammany Parish Jail in Covington, north of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Murray, 29, is charged with murder, said Capt. George Bonnett of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Lawmakers Attack Feds’ Expanded Role

Lawmakers warned Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner on Thursday that President Obama’s plan to greatly expand the Federal Reserve’s powers to oversee financial markets might overburden the central bank and lead to future problems on Wall Street going unchecked.
 The agreement discounts medications for Medicare beneficiaries facing high out-of-pocket expenses when their benefits reach a gap in coverage.
“This is a significant breakthrough on the road to health care reform, one that will make the difference in the lives of many older Americans,” Obama said at the White House.
“Today marks a major step forward, but it will only be meaningful if we complete the journey. … I have to repeat and revive an old saying we had from the campaign: Yes, we can. We are going to get this done.”
